“You never know what’s going to happen,” said Lt. Omar Stout, at a recent healthcare panel held at BOCES Center for Career Services., referring to the fact that providing care for people is rarely routine in emergency care.
Stout was on the panel with Eshka Moran, a registered nurse and nurse practitioner at White Plains Hospital. Career Services students from healthcare-related programs listened to the panelists discuss their careers for an hour before they asked asked the panelists questions.
Stout detailed various new technologies that have improved efficiency during emergencies. and discussed training certificates available, including the Empress EMS Academy, an intensive 12-week course taught three times a year in Yonkers and Poughkeepsie that prepares students to take the New York State EMT exam. Empress also helps fund education for those seeking to become paramedics.
Students were provided with more information at the end of the event as well as a QR code that can help them learn more about healthcare careers in the Hudson Valley.
Even for working professionals, the learning never stops.
“We are always teaching on a daily basis,” Stout said. “We’re always willing to help and willing to teach.”
