Savion Best was named Communications Specialist of the year at the WREMSCO (Westchester Regional Emergency Medical Services Council) awards in May.

Best began his career with Empress as an EMT, where he developed a strong foundation in patient care and field operations. Seeking a greater challenge and to expand his impact within EMS, he transitioned into Communications.

Through his dedication and drive, he became a certified Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD), playing a critical role in coordinating responses and ensuring patients receive timely and appropriate care. His experience in both the field and the communications center provides him with a well-rounded perspective, enhancing his ability to support crews and contribute to overall system efficiency.

“Savion was nominated in recognition of his exceptional performance and leadership within the communications center. As one of the most senior dispatchers in the room, he serves as a steady and reliable presence, consistently demonstrating professionalism and confidence in high-pressure situations,” said Deputy Chief Sean O’Brien.

“He remains calm under pressure, skillfully providing clear and effective EMD instructions over the phone while simultaneously coordinating the closest and most appropriate resources to each call. Not only is he a certified EMD dispatcher, but he is also highly knowledgeable about service contracts, response areas, and hospital capabilities, including specialized services,” O’Brien continued. “This depth of knowledge allows him to make informed, efficient decisions that directly enhance patient outcomes and system performance. His experience, composure, and dedication make him an invaluable asset to the operation and a highly deserving candidate for this recognition.”

“Savion’s impact on EMS is demonstrated through his dual role as a certified EMT and EMD dispatcher, where he plays a critical part in the earliest stages of patient care. Through effective EMD dispatching, he ensures callers receive clear, calm, and life-saving instructions prior to the arrival of field units, directly influencing patient outcomes during critical moments.

“His ability to accurately triage calls, prioritize responses, and deploy the most appropriate resources strengthens system efficiency and ensures patients receive the right care at the right time. His clinical background as an EMT further enhances his decision-making, allowing him to understand the needs of both the patient and responding crews.

“By serving as a vital link between the public and EMS providers, Savion contributes significantly to the overall effectiveness, safety, and reliability of the EMS system,” O’Brien said.
