Three teams of Empress paramedics and EMTs are being honored with Meritorious Awards from Westchester REMSCO (Regional Emergency Medical Services Council) for their assistance in the deliveries of two baby girls and a boy in 2024.
On May 29, 2024: Paramedic Paul Mellamphy and EMTs Dainy Estrada and Jordany Perez responded to a report of a childbirth in progress.
Upon arrival, the team assessed the situation and found the patient in the process of crowning. They assisted in delivering a healthy baby girl and ensured that the newborn received immediate care, clamping and cutting the umbilical cord and handing the baby to her mother for warmth and comfort.
“Their quick thinking and efficient teamwork provided much-needed support during this critical moment,” said Deputy Chief Sean O’Brien.
The crew then transported the baby and mother to the labor and delivery floor of the hospital, where they received further care.
On Oct. 11, 2024: Paramedic Stacy Zentek, EMT Vrinda Raghubar, and EMT Joshua Brown responded to a childbirth call.
Arriving at the scene, the crew found the patient in active labor. They assessed her — noting that the baby was crowning — and safely transferred her to the stretcher.
The team then initiated delivery procedures, assisting in the birth of a healthy baby boy. The umbilical cord was properly clamped and cut, and the newborn placed in the arms of his mother to maintain warmth and bonding. Following the safe delivery, the crew continued transport to the hospital, where they ensured a smooth arrival at the obstetrics floor for continued care.
“The professionalism, composure, and teamwork exhibited during this high-pressure call are a testament to the training, dedication, and compassion of this crew,” said Deputy Chief Sean O’Brien, “Their actions not only ensured the safety and well-being of both mother and child, but also exemplified the highest standards of pre-hospital care.”
On Oct. 13, 2024:
Paramedic Daniel DaSilva, EMT Jalia Williams, and EMT Brendon Henrys were dispatched to a report of a childbirth in progress, with the patient noted to be past 40 weeks’ gestation and in active labor. Upon arrival, the team assessed the situation, secured the patient on a stretcher, and initiated transport to the hospital.
On the way to the hospital, the crew recognized the patient was crowning and made the critical decision to pull over and initiate delivery procedures. A healthy baby girl was born in the field, umbilical cord clamped and cut, and the newborn was handed to her mother for warmth and bonding. Following the delivery, the team continued transport and ensured both mother and child were brought safely to the obstetrics floor at the hospital for further care.
“Their quick thinking, clinical skill, and compassionate care exemplify the highest standards of EMS service. We commend Paramedic DaSilva, EMT Williams, and EMT Henrys for their dedication, excellence, and commitment to patient care,” O’Brien said.
